Songs by W. B. Yeats

Down by the Salley Gardens

"Down by the Salley Gardens,

My love and I did meet..."

A beautiful poem, written in 1889 by William Butler Yeats in honor of his love for Maude Gonne. It was set to a traditional Irish Air, "The Maids of Mourne Shore," by Yeats himself, and is presented here as sheet music arranged for harp and voice.

The sheet music is four pages, 8½" x 11", printed on ivory paper, and includes words, melody, arrangement for the harp, and chord symbols. Although arranged for the lever harp, it can also be played on the pedal harp, and like other harp music, it can also be played on the piano. It is in the key of C with no accidentals, and the level is easy to intermediate. $3.00.

The Pity of Love

"A pity beyond all telling
Is hid in the heart of love."

What W.B. Yeats meant by "pity" is what we would call "tenderness": he expresses his wish to protect his beloved even from such innocent things as "the shadowy hazel grove." A lovely, classic poem, set to a beautiful melody in the Mixolydian mode (the seventh is dropped a half-step) that is reminiscent of traditional Irish music, arranged for the lever harp. Level: easy to intermediate. This piece is pure Celtic Twilight! Click to hear it.

8½" x 11", four pages (all music), printed in black on ivory paper. It includes words, melody for voice, chord symbols, and arrangement for the harp. $3.00.

Into the Twilight

"Outworn heart, in a time outworn,
Come clear of the nets of wrong and right;
Laugh, heart, again in the grey twilight,
Sigh, heart, again in the dew of the morn."

"Into the Twilight," by William Butler Yeats, is one of the classic poems of the Celtic Twilight. This sheet music presents it set to music and arranged for the lever harp. The level is easy to intermediate, and the harp plays a delicate counterpoint to the melody. A magical piece!

The sheet music is 8½" x 11", four pages (all music), printed in black on ivory paper, and includes a lovely, intricate Celtic harp illustration by Elly Fithian. $3.00.
