The Black Bull of
Norroway
“Seven long years I
served for thee, The bloody shirt I wrang
for thee, The glassy hill I clomb
for thee, Wilt thou not waken and
turn to me?” ‘The Black Bull of Norroway”
from Andrew Lang’s Blue Fairy Book is one of the most beautiful of all fairy
tales and is the one cited by J.R.R. Tolkien in his essay “On Fairy Stories”
as an example of the “eucatastrophe” when sorrow turns suddenly to joy. Here
it is retold in a song, with the lady’s song to the sleeping knight as its
refrain. At the end, the refrain is repeated three times, followed by the
spoken words, “He woke, and turned to her.”
The song is written for the
harp but can also be played on the guitar or other instruments. The sheet
music presents the song in lead-sheet form, including words, melody, and
chord symbols, printed in black on ivory paper with a Scottish bull
illustration by Elly Fithian. 4 pages, 8½” x 11”. Level: intermediate. $3.00. Hail
Holy Queen

ancient prayer, with each verse ending with the words “O Clement, O Loving, O
Sweet Virgin Mary!” The sheet music

which can also be played alone as a harp solo. 4 pages, 8½” x 11”, ivory
paper. Level: easy to intermediate. $3.00. Cast Aside Thy Cloak of Darkness “Cast aside Thy cloak of
darkness, Jesus, brighter than the
sun!” The lyrics are based on a
passage by George MacDonald about a character in his book who watches “the
far horizon” for the Second Coming of Christ “with His banners.” The melody
is “Nettleton” (“Come Thou Fount”), and the harp arrangement can be used for
any song with this popular melody. 4 pages, 8½” x 11”, ivory paper. Easy to
intermediate. $3.00. White
Hemlocks, Yellow Violets
“White hemlocks, yellow
violets, and hyacinths blue: Three blossoms, three
colors that I will give to you; White moonlight, yellow
lamplight, and the green light of leaves, And the morning, and the
evening, and a heart that never grieves.” This song includes words, melody, chord symbols, and an intricate arrangement that is equally suitable for harp, piano, or guitar. 4 pages, 8½” x 11”, ivory paper. Intermediate. $3.00. Click to hear it. O

Could Understand the Voices of the Trees

style of Irish traditional folk songs. 4 pages (all music), 8½” x 11”, ivory

Level: lower to middle intermediate. $3.00. All In White She Came “All in white she came,
The time she spoke to them, A gold border to her
veil, A gold star at her hem.” The atmosphere of this little song can perhaps be compared to the scissor-cut art of Sister Mary Jean Dorcy – the lighter, joyful side of our Blessed Mother. Its premise is “What if?” – what if the star on Mary’s hem, as she appeared at Fatima, were a real star “with worlds revolving ‘round it” – wouldn’t it be wonderful to live there? Perfect for children, and the arrangement is easy enough for young beginners, but older harpists can enjoy it too. $3.00. More Music for Harp
